Artist Statement
The process of creating art and the discovery that goes hand in hand with it are my passion. I'm interested in varied subject matter, and approach the various subjects with different processes. The abstract paintings that I create help me explore aesthetics as well as personal narratives. With these paintings, I break up the space into what I find are interesting, dynamic shapes. Then the paintings often take on a life of their own that direct their evolution. Usually a personal narrative develops, though it is abstracted for the viewer. The shapes in the pictures mean something to me that would not be readily understandable to the viewer.
My figurative work is more straightforward; a way for me to contemplate and interpret the scene I am painting and my relationship to it. Whether abstract or figurative, my paintings are a way for me to explore the formal aspects of my work and internal questions of my unique experience as a human being. I aim to create images that resonate with me in visual and conceptual terms, and hope that viewers interact similarly, bringing to the viewing their individual understandings of what they see.
